GLI ANNI ROMANI DI SZ\u0150NYI \/ THE ROMANIAN YEARS OF SZ\u0150NYI An exhibition of Sz\u0151nyi's works opened at the end of November at the Hungarian Academy in Rome, in the former Palazzo Falconieri.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition was prepared and organised by our museum on the spot, using material from its own collection and from a private collection. The museum's four-strong team arrived in Rome before the Sz\u0151nyi works were exhibited, where we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the paintings. The exhibition of Sz\u0151nyi's works from his last trip to Rome and the last year of his life afterwards was held in one of the most impressive spaces of the Academy building, the first floor of the Hall of Fame. It was here that we began to build the exhibition, which consists of forty works, mostly prints and one panel painting. The graphic works include individual gouaches, pen and ink drawings and etchings, with subjects depicting small towns, beaches and harbours around Rome.\u00a0<\/div>\n
We worked at night, mainly to have time to explore Rome during the day. By midnight, all the artwork had been put up on the walls, and the next day we were left with the photographs that document Sz\u0151nyi's years in Rome. The photographs, taken in 1929, were taken by Sz\u0151nyi himself of his family and of the artists and their families who had been sent to Rome on state scholarships.<\/div>\n
The photos are located in the lobby between the Ceremonial Staircase and the Ceremonial Corridor, helping to set the mood for the exhibition. Once everything was in place, we were satisfied that the marble-tiled space, with its mosaic floors, huge ceilings and huge windows overlooking the Tiber River, was a worthy setting for Sz\u0151nyi's work.\u00a0<\/div>\n

The two-day Sz\u0151nyi Weekend was a fitting end to the quadrennial year with a series of events.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Saturday, October 5, we remembered Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi, daughter of Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi and Melinda Bart\u00f3ky, who was born a hundred years ago and died ten years ago. After a toast by Mayor Ervin Ferenczy Ern\u0151 Ferenczy, the commemoration began with a moving message from Rome by the editor-in-chief of Vatican Radio, Jesuit pastor L\u00e1szl\u00f3 V\u00e9rtesaljai, followed by Vikt\u00f3ria Somogyi, a staff member of Vatican Radio, who spoke about her personal memories and her relationship with Zsuzsa, who lived in Rome for almost 50 years and worked for the radio from the age of 65 to 80.<\/p>\n

Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi and her husband M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Triznya left Hungary in 1949 and settled in Rome. For decades, they hosted the best of Hungarian cultural and artistic life in their home, in their literary salon known as Triznya's Tavern. S\u00e1ndor M\u00e1rai, J\u00e1nos Pilinszky, Ferenc Fejt\u0151, Magda Szab\u00f3, P\u00e9ter Esterh\u00e1zy, Ferenc M\u00e1dl, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, Asztrik V\u00e1rszegi, Ferenc Juh\u00e1sz, Ferenc Szab\u00f3, Cs. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Szab\u00f3, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Sz\u00f6r\u00e9nyi, Mikl\u00f3s Hubay, Zolt\u00e1n Kall\u00f3s, S\u00e1ndor Cso\u00f3ri and many others. Many of the guests and friends who have visited the tavern over the past half century have come to remember Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi, the fairy from Aventino, together. Among those remembering were the actors Anna Kubik, Anna Nagy and Kata Husz\u00e1rik, Mikl\u00f3s Beer, retired Bishop of V\u00e1c, Father Imre L\u00e1szl\u00f3 N\u00e9met, graphic designer Gy\u00f6rgy Szokoly, literary historians Zolt\u00e1n Hafner and Judit R\u00f3na, Barna Kabay and Katalin Pet\u00e9nyi, the makers of the portrait film Miracle in Milan and Rome, and P\u00e9ter Muszatics, director of the portrait film The Fairy of Aventine. The films about Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi were screened during the commemoration. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Simon, the former director of the Pest County Museums Directorate, and his successor, M\u00e1rton K\u00e1lnoky-Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6ssy, who also chaired the discussion, were present and participated in the afternoon round table discussion. In addition to Vikt\u00f3ria Somogyi, R\u00f3zsa K\u00f6p\u00f6czi and Zsuzsa Klemmn\u00e9 N\u00e9meth, former directors of the Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi Memorial Museum, gave a presentation at the Memorial Day. In the afternoon, we walked with the commemorators to the cemetery, where we laid wreaths and flowers on the grave of Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi, and the day ended with a mass celebrated by Bishop Mikl\u00f3s Beer in the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Snow in memory of Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi.<\/p>\n

On Sunday 6 October, the second day of the Sz\u0151nyi Weekend, we commemorated the centenary of Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi's arrival in Zebeg\u00e9ny. The programmes, which started in the afternoon, focused on the presentation of eight Sz\u0151nyi paintings recently received from the Museum of Fine Arts - Hungarian National Gallery. Blanka Blah\u00f3 opened the events with a flute performance, followed by a guided tour by Iv\u00e1n Kamar\u00e1s, an actor, of one of the newly exhibited works, Sz\u0151nyi's self-portrait, Hegytet\u0151n (On the Mountain Roof). After a brief biographical summary, he presented the emblematic work, which won first prize at the 1925 Nude exhibition at the Kunsthalle in Budapest, with his own thoughts, personal connections and stories, and with parallels to his fellow artists, in front of the painting in the upstairs studio. The visitors, who persevered despite the cool weather, were then treated to a guided tour by 11-year-old Miksa Sz\u00fccs. The young museum lover spoke of his own observations, thoughts and feelings as he toured the museum, inspired by the cosy rooms of the Memorial House and some of the painter's works of art that were particularly dear to him. We learned how Miksa and his family would sit on the sofa in the Sz\u0151nyis' former bedroom, watching TV together by the warmth of the tiled stove, why he loves the \"cute\" cows in Sz\u0151nyi's paintings so much, and why the painter's unique technique makes the picture of the village \"move\" even though there is not a single person in it.<\/p>\n

The series of unusual image analyses was concluded by a witty and quiz-filled presentation by Tam\u00e1s Solymos, psychologist and consultant in the field of visual expression psychology, who introduced us to a relatively new discipline. It turned out that Sz\u0151nyi was a \"perfectly fine\", well-balanced, humane, brave man who was in control of his emotions. His works are essentially serene and harmonious, the work of an artist who was reserved and somewhat repressed in his emotions. Sz\u0151nyi felt at home in Zebeg\u00e9ny, and the idyllic environment he created around himself was conveyed through his lyrical, complexly composed works of art, which had a unique atmosphere and mood.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, creative activities continued throughout the programme. We could paint portraits of each other and imagine ourselves in a landscape or environment that was ideal for us, based on the available, well-known works of art. During the two-day event, the guests could taste a lot of delicacies, courtesy of the municipality and the kitchen of the Sunflower Nursery School in Zebeg\u00e9ny, which helped to alleviate the discomfort caused by the cold weather. On 5-6 October, we celebrate this year's quadrennial with two days of commemorations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We commemorate Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi, born 130 years ago, his daughter Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi, born 100 years ago, who passed away 10 years ago, and we also commemorate the fact that the painter arrived in Zebeg\u00e9ny 100 years ago, a place that was decisive for his life and his art.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Saturday 5 October from 11 am<\/strong> We are holding the Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi Centenary Memorial Day. With lectures, film screenings and round-table discussions, we will recall the memory of Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi, who for fifty years ran the literary salon in Rome, which she started together with her husband, M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Triznya, and which became known as the Triznya Pub. Zsuzsa spent the most beautiful years of her childhood, and perhaps of her life, in Zebeg\u00e9ny, which is commemorated in several of her films and books. Her life, her captivating personality, her work as a writer and her relationship with Zebeg\u00e9ny are told by her friends, acquaintances and admirers. In the afternoon, the museum programme will end with a curatorial guided tour of the temporary exhibition Father and Daughter, followed at 6 p.m. by a Mass in honour of Zsuzsa Sz\u0151nyi in the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Snow, celebrated by retired Bishop Mikl\u00f3s Beer, Bishop of V\u00e1c County, at the Havas Boldogasszony Roman Catholic Church. Sunday 6 October from 14:00<\/strong> the museum programmes start. On 17 January, the 130th anniversary of Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi's birth, we commemorated him with a wreath-laying ceremony, a painting exhibition and an interactive exhibition. The focus of this year's celebrations will be on Sz\u0151nyi's early and very important works, eight of which were recently received from the Museum of Fine Arts on permanent deposit. Some of the works in storage have already been on display in Zebeg\u00e9ny, so you could say they have returned home. The other paintings are new, the most important of which is On the mountain<\/strong> in which the artist paints himself doubled up with the Danube in the background. This rare and important work of art is not the work of an art historian, but of a Iv\u00e1n Kamar\u00e1s actor<\/strong> presents to the public. Other new paintings will also be presented in an unusual way. Miksa Sz\u00fccs<\/strong> talks about his favourite paintings, Tam\u00e1s Solymos<\/strong> a psychologist and consultant in the psychology of visual expression, will explain in a scientifically entertaining way how the personality of an artist can become an open book for the viewer by analysing the details of his paintings.
In addition to the painting exhibitions, there will be quizzes, motif-finding and creative activities for children and adults alike. Those who wish can place themselves in a period or landscape of their choice, just as Sz\u0151nyi did in Zebeg\u00e9ny. You can try self-portrait painting, but enterprising couples, family members and friends can also paint each other's portraits. On both days of the Sz\u0151nyi Weekend, which will also include other surprises, we welcome all those interested.<\/p>\n

What's in the smaller and bigger boxes in the museum?<\/strong>
The former home of the painter Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi and his family has been preserved almost intact for posterity. Not only their furniture, such as a cabinet with pull-out maps, or their personal objects, such as an old stereoscope that makes the image appear three-dimensional, but also the various boxes that are fascinating to open. Many things were stored in recycled boxes. In former medicine boxes, paint dust and other dyes, in cigarette boxes, thread knobs and pieces of broken glasses, in case they might be good for something else. It's not just the preserved things that are no longer in production that are interesting, but the boxes themselves, with their inscriptions about their original purpose telling us a lot about the era and the customs of the people who lived in the house. Let's discover the secrets of the Sz\u0151nyi House boxes together.<\/p>\n\n

We held a museum art camp for primary school children!<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Last Friday was the end of our second art camp for primary school children.\u00a0
The camp explored how the visual arts and different artistic disciplines such as music, dance, crafts, literature and theatre are interconnected.
Some examples of the week's activities include: children designing a \"fairy tale girl\", making furniture sets, a movable stage set in a shoebox, and drawing their imaginary pictures on paper, accompanied by music. We also went to the quiet, shady Danube bank in the room, where the sounds of nature were the theme of their creations.
On Friday afternoon we closed the week with an exhibition in the Sz\u0151nyi Garden theatre.<\/p>\n

It was a great pleasure to see everyone from last year's campers come and to add new little artists to the team.

Eight Sz\u0151nyi paintings arrived at the museum<\/strong> July 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Eight Sz\u0151nyi paintings arrived from the Museum of Fine Arts-Hungarian National Gallery to the Sz\u0151nyi Museum. All of them are very important works. One of them is the monumental On the Mountaintop, with which Sz\u0151nyi won the first prize of the Nude Exhibition of Youth, which presented 444 works at the Kunsthalle in 1925. Painted the year after he settled in Zebeg\u00e9ny, the painting is an enormous full-length self-portrait of the painter in full life size. It is one of the double portraits of himself in different roles. Two years earlier, in 1923, he painted himself with his elderly mother, where his powerful figure is in the foreground. In the same year, he painted a full-length portrait of his family, Lunch at his father's house, where Sz\u0151nyi sits with his back to his father, mother and sisters. The Boy, holding a glass of water in his right hand, is sitting with his back to the viewer, already coming out of his previous life, saying goodbye to his home and his family. In this year Sz\u0151nyi became engaged to Melinda Bart\u00f3ky, who would become his wife in 1924, their first child Zsuzsa was born and they moved to Zebeg\u00e9ny. Here Sz\u0151nyi is in the background, his dark figure barely visible, with the pregnant Melinda in pink in front of him, showing that the painter was preparing for the role of the father who would maintain the family.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

In 1925, in the painting On the Mountaintop, the artist paints himself doubled over the Danube. One figure is a nude, the other a half-dressed man in trousers and a hat, a village man. According to Sz\u0151nyi himself, he found in Zebeg\u00e9ny everything he needed to develop his art: the landscape, nature and the people who lived with it. While in 1923 Sz\u0151nyi painted himself as the Son, in 1924 as the Husband and future father, in 1925 as the Man, the Artist and the Man who had found his place in life.<\/p>\n\n

The nude, as the mythological-allegorical idealised figure of neoclassical painting, is the symbol of Sz\u0151nyi's painting up to that point, his clothed other self with the same posture, retreating into the background, symbolising his new, Zebeg\u00e9nyi era. The nude, symbolising the past, stands before the clothed man, symbolising the present, painted in strong colours. The equivalence of the past with the present remains, in fact, an indication that Sz\u0151nyi, although his themes and style are about to change, his classical values and commitment remain, not completely dissolved in the new artistic expression. He takes it with him. In Zebeg\u00e9ny, nature, the landscape, the capture of simple everyday life is the new artistic challenge for him, but he does not become a naturalistic painter, he presents the experiences he has seen, the village life he has lived, in an idealised form with his artistic means. While the nudes in his earlier neoclassical paintings were more ironic and lifelike than usual, the figures in his village scenes are more ethereal, floating, and contingent as they stand in the idyllic landscape painted around them. In Zebeg\u00e9ny, Sz\u0151nyi built an idealised world around himself, rooted in reality. He was a soldier from 1914 to 1919, fought throughout World War I, and five years later found a place that he thought was worth capturing again and again. Not only the landscape, the Danube Bend, but also the natural, village life, which he thought was pure and unspoilt, and with it the unbreakable, ever-living harmony.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

This painting of alter egos standing on the hilltop of Zebeg\u00e9ny is rare and unique among self-portraits. This painting by Sz\u0151nyi, who depicted himself both naked and clothed, could have been the conclusion of a life's work, since it uses simple means to summarise what he has to say about himself with dramatic monumentality. The work, which could be interpreted as an artistic creed, shows no hesitation, no question marks. From the first moment he arrived in Zebeg\u00e9ny, Sz\u0151nyi felt that his presence here would have an elemental effect on his art. The more vivid, brilliant, powerful, ochre-yellowish figure of the nude alter-ego and the darker-toned robed figure are distant parallels to the knight alter-egos accompanying the coffin in medieval funeral processions. Since the time of Charles the Great, it was customary for the deceased knight to be accompanied on his final journey by two alter-egos in full armour, the one in black representing the warrior, the fighting self of the deceased, and the one in gold the hero, the heroic knight, the ideal. The one bade farewell to the Body, the other to the Soul and escorted him through the gates of eternity. Somehow, this is what Sz\u0151nyi anticipated in the double portrait he painted of himself barely a year after moving to Zebeg\u00e9ny in 1925.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Father and daughter - The world of childhood in Sz\u0151nyi's art<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition traces an arc from Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi's childhood to his becoming a father, and from the birth of his daughter Zsuzsa to her becoming a granddaughter. Sz\u0151nyi moved with his wife, Melinda Bart\u00f3ky, to his father-in-law's summer house in Zebeg\u00e9ny in 1924 and in the same year his daughter Zsuzsa was born, followed two years later by his son P\u00e9ter. It was in Zebeg\u00e9ny that Sz\u0151nyi's painting came to fruition, where he developed his distinctive and unique style. The subjects of his paintings also changed. In addition to the Danube landscape, nature and the people living with it, family, home and intimate, intimate moments came to the fore. He made many sketches, studies and paintings of his wife and children, which follow their development. Their graphic works are at once lyrical, emotional, personal and timeless. The exhibition is primarily a thematic selection of the rarely exhibited graphic material in the collection, but also includes some of Sz\u0151nyi's paintings from his childhood. The exhibition also includes family photographs, most of which were taken by the painter himself of his family and children, with artistic exactitude.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the birth of Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi, we are launching a competition for students in upper secondary and high school. The task:\u00a0paraphrase<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0creation - a re-imagining or re-creation of an existing work of art using different media, techniques or style, which in the case of our application may be\u00a0painting, graphics<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0video.\u00a0<\/strong>As a starting point, we provide 10 tableaux by Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi, which we publish on our website:

Paintings \"brought to life\"<\/strong>
Also timed to coincide with the anniversary commemoration was the launch of an interactive exhibition, which was supported by the National Cultural Fund. The result of nearly a year of joint work, the animations that bring Sz\u0151nyi's paintings to life were created for the anniversary. For a few moments, the deserted street of Zebeg\u00e9ny comes to life, and family members preparing for bed at night \"move\" in the intimate room. In another short film, we can see and hear how a painting is made, how Sz\u0151nyi applies layers of paint with his brush. And an animation accompanying the iconic Garden Bench, which radiates peace and tranquillity, makes you wonder what Sz\u0151nyi was trying to say with the little white bench hiding under the shady trees of the garden during the wildest years of the war.<\/p>\n

The animations are special in that they are made exclusively by moving the pictorial elements, layers of paint, shadows and figurative elements on the paintings. This technique also reveals that Sz\u0151nyi's paintings, which radiate a restrained lyricism, are in fact highly complex works of art, consisting of several layers of paint superimposed on each other, in which the colours and materials merge in a unified harmony by the end of the creative process.<\/p>\n

As alternative interpretations, the moving images and sound effects assigned to the paintings represent a kind of added value, going beyond mere spectacle. They tell stories, evoke emotions in the viewer and thus arouse curiosity to learn more about the background of the works and the circumstances of their creation.<\/p>\n

With the animations that can be viewed through the Artivive app, one of the museum's aims is to appeal to the younger generation and to meet the ever-changing needs of museum visitors in general. We believe that the right proportion of interactive multimedia techniques can enrich the audience experience. New types of interpretation can show different aspects of a work of art, offer new ways of approaching it, and provide a more exciting and fresh experience for museum visitors, who can become (inter)active participants in the reception of the artworks.<\/p>\n

The so-called Augmented Reality application now on display at the museum is very versatile and has many additional possibilities.After the four paintings, we plan to \"bring to life\", among other things, the artist's small studio, using animations of old archive photos. Thanks to this technique, visitors will be able to see Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi working on his artworks by pointing their smart device at a coded spot in the studio. Danube Bend in Spring - New painting in the museum!<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the 130th anniversary of Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi's birth, the museum's permanent exhibition was extended with a painting that, in terms of its subject matter, has been missing from the series of works presenting Sz\u0151nyi's art. A\u00a0Spring Danube Bend<\/strong>\u00a0was recently purchased by the Istv\u00e1n Sz\u0151nyi Foundation with the aim of enriching the permanent exhibition of the museum. The work, which is now in the public domain, fills a real gap, as the museum has not had a panel depicting the Danube Bend before. The painting was presented by Zsuzsa Klemmn\u00e9 N\u00e9meth, chairwoman of the foundation's board of trustees and retired director of the museum. She said that the foundation had long wanted to buy a Sz\u0151nyi painting, but previous attempts had failed. With its lush, bright colours, the new painting represents a mature period in Sz\u0151nyi's painting, radiating the harmony and serenity that gradually became dominant in his pictures from the beginning of his time in Zebeg\u00e9nyi.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
