The moments in the life of István Szőnyi and his family are recalled not only through the paintings, original furniture and objects, but also through the many archival family photos in the museum's collection. What was the Zebegény house like when József Bartóky, Szőnyi's father-in-law, bought it in 1905, how István Szőnyi cradled his newborn Zsuzsa in his arms on the veranda, what kind of animals were kept, and what was the huge garden of the house, which also served as an open-air studio for Szőnyi, like? How did the members of the Zebegény artists' colony, who gathered around Szőnyi, organise their big parties on the veranda between the two world wars, and how did Szőnyi paint his pictures in his small studio in the attic above the kitchen, where we can still hear the original wooden floorboards creaking? We will tell you all about it during our guided tours illustrated with archive photos.

What might be lurking beneath the forgotten drawers of a former home, what personal objects can we find when we look inside a cupboard or open the lid of a box? The former home of painter István Szőnyi and his family has been preserved almost intact for posterity. The house became a museum as soon as the last tenant left. The furniture and objects that remain give the impression that the residents were only away for a short time. But it is not only their furniture and utensils that remind us of them, but also the boxes containing various items that are fascinating to open. The guided tour will also show you tools from the 19th and 20th centuries that the inhabitants used every day, but which are no longer part of everyday life. These objects and small accessories tell us a lot about the personalities, lifestyles, habits and times of the people who lived here.

István Szőnyi was one of the most outstanding Hungarian painters of the period between the two world wars. He lived in Zebegény from the age of thirty, which had an elemental influence on his art. Famous as the painter of the Danube Bend, he discovered the idyllic village after the First World War, where he found peace and everything he needed to develop his art. Thanks to Szőnyi's genius for creating atmospheres, there is much more to these lyrical pictures than meets the eye. The behind-the-scenes secrets of the various periods and creative methods of this deeply human painter, who loved life and nature, are revealed when we look through the exhibited pictures together.

Not everything is black in the dark, at least in a painter's house. Take a tour of the old house, see Szőnyi's paintings among the old furniture and see the painter's studio in a completely different light.
AFTER DARK...
... we take a torch around the cramped rooms, illuminating their special details,
... we immerse ourselves in the world of the master's most interesting works,
... we peep into the depths of the locked drawers...
In the silence of the night, we can hear the stories the house whispers.
Let yourself be enchanted by the secrets of the nightly tales!
